Breaking: The Washington Capitals topped the Montreal Canadiens in Game 5 on Wednesday night to advance to the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Washington, the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference, beat a scrappy Montreal team, 4-1, on home ice to take the best-of-seven series. The Capitals had not clinched a playoff series at home since 2015.

The Capitals will meet the Carolina Hurricanes in the second round.
