Inter Miami has been here before. Down 2-0 heading into the second leg of a knockout tie, at home, with everything on the line. They pulled off the comeback in the CONCACAF Champions Cup quarterfinals against LAFC, but doing it again won’t be easy. The Vancouver Whitecaps are organized, physical and confident after bossing much of the first leg against Miami despite conceding possession.
Wednesday’s semifinal, however, is uncharted territory for both clubs. The Whitecaps have never made a Champions Cup final. Neither has Miami. For Lionel Messi and his team, that’s not a milestone — it’s the expectation. Javier Mascherano’s side needs urgency, sharper midfield play and a spark from Luis Suárez, who hasn’t scored in eight straight matches. With no reliable No. 9 behind him and few answers when Messi is bottled up, Miami is running out of margin.

The Whitecaps, coached by Jesper Sorensen, know that. They have a two-goal cushion and nothing to lose. One more disciplined night could make history. For Miami, anything less than that risks turning a superteam season into a super disappointment.
