4 dead after car crashes into after-school program building near Springfield

SANGAMON COUNTY (KMOV and 25News Now) – Four people have died after a car crashed into an after-school program building in Chatham, Illinois near Springfield.

According to the Chatham Police Department, the incident happened at the YNOT after-school daycare at 301 Breckenridge Road around 3:20 p.m. on Monday.

Police said the vehicle hit multiple people outside of the building before going through the building and exiting on the other side.

Three people hit outside of the building, and one person hit inside of the building have died. Several people were taken to the hospital with injuries, including one person who was airlifted from the scene.

The victims’ ages have not been released.

The driver of the vehicle was taken to the hospital for evaluation after the incident.

A reunification point was set up at Chatham Baptist Church.

Meantime, Gov. JB Pritzker issued the following statement on his Facebook page about the tragedy:

“My administration is closely monitoring the crash in Chatham. As we continue to learn more, please follow the guidance of all local authorities. Let’s wrap our arms around the community tonight as we receive updates on the situation.”
