The Seattle Mariners’ short-handed starting rotation may be facing some more trouble.
Injury updates on seven Mariners, including Brash and Robles
Ace Logan Gilbert was pulled from Friday night’s start against the Miami Marlins after just three innings with right forearm tightness. It’s a big concern, as forearm injuries can often be precursors to elbow trouble.
The right-handed Gilbert was cruising before he exited. He hadn’t allowed a baserunner and had three strikeouts while tossing just 29 pitches.
Casey Lawrence came in during the fourth inning to relief Gilbert.
Seattle is already down right-handed starter George Kirby, who was shut down during spring training with right shoulder inflammation. Kirby threw a bullpen at T-Mobile Park on Friday. General manager Justin Hollander said the hope is Kirby can throw a live batting practice during the M’s homestand, which ends Wednesday. But not timetable has been given yet for his return to major league action.
With Kirby out, right-hander Emerson Hancock has made three starts and right-hander Luis F. Castillo has made two in his place.
Gilbert hasn’t missed a start since making his major league debut with Seattle in May 2021. He made at least 32 starts in each of the past three seasons, including 33 while pitching an MLB-high 208 2/3 innings in 2024.
After making his first All-Star team and finishing sixth in Cy Young voting last season, Gilbert was off to another strong start in 2025. In seven starts including Friday night, he has a 1-1 record, 2.37 ERA and 47 strikeouts over 33 1/3 innings.
