If you’re a Boston Celtic, success is only defined by one thing: championships.
The Celtics have won eighteen NBA titles. Eleven of those came during the Bill Russell era and seven have come since he retired, including last year’s, which starred former Blue Devil Jayson Tatum.
However, despite continued success, despite great teams in the 1970’s and ‘80’s, Boston has not won back-to-back titles since Russell retired in 1969.
Worse, the Los Angeles Lakers did it in 1986-87 and 1987-88. The Pistons did it in 1998-99 and 1990-91. And then the Lakers pulled off a three-peat from 1999-00 to 2001-02.
The Bulls did a pair of three-peats punctuated by back-to-back titles by Houston in 1993-94 and 1994-95.
The Lakers pulled off another back-to-back fin 2008-09 and 2009-10 and Golden State got back-to-backs in 2016-17 and 2017-18.
But Boston hasn’t done it since 1969.
So there’s a certain amount of pressure on Tatum and company to do it.
First step is to get past fellow Brotherhood member Paolo Banchero and his Orlando Magic teammates. Since the Magic defend the three as well as anyone in the NBA, that won’t be easy.
However, Boston is still a team with a core in its prime and they have a shot at doing something that’s really, really tough to do. We’d love to see Tatum help take Boston there.
