Nora Aunor, the beloved “Superstar” of Philippine entertainment and National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts, has passed away at the age of 71. Her son, Ian de Leon, confirmed the heartbreaking news through a social media post.
Her death comes shortly after that of another screen icon, Pilita Corrales, who was the mother-in-law of Aunor’s daughter, actress Lotlot de Leon.

Born Nora Cabaltera Villamayor, Aunor’s influence spanned generations, beginning with her rise as a singing contest champion in the 1960s. She would go on to become one of the most revered and decorated performers in Philippine cinema history.
Aunor was celebrated for her unforgettable roles in classics like Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos, Himala, Bona, and Thy Womb. Her performances earned her critical acclaim and the distinction of being “widely regarded as the greatest actress of her time.”
She made history as the only Filipino to win Best Actress at the prestigious Asian Film Awards. At the local level, she became the most nominated performer in Gawad Urian history, holding the record with 21 nominations and seven wins.
“Aunor holds the record for the most nominations at the Gawad Urian Awards, with 21 nods and seven wins,” a testament to her enduring excellence in acting. She was also inducted into the FAMAS Hall of Fame and received accolades from international institutions like the Cairo International Film Festival and the Asia Pacific Screen Awards.
Beyond film, Aunor left a lasting mark on stage and television. She was praised for her dramatic range and cultural impact across mediums. “A former recording artist who started her career through a singing contest, Aunor’s influence extended beyond film, appearing in stage plays, television dramas, and concerts.”
In 2022, she received one of the country’s highest cultural honors when she was named a National Artist, an acknowledgment that “cemented her legacy in the arts.”
Just weeks before her death, Aunor made headlines when she withdrew from her 2025 party-list bid. She cited health reasons and a “loss of trust” in her decision to step away from politics.
With her passing, the Philippines loses not just a star, but a cultural icon whose voice, presence, and artistry helped shape the nation’s artistic soul.
