How Thomas Tuchel got England’s 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign off to the perfect start in first game

It seemed imperative for England to get the win in this game. It was a tactically interesting performance, with the standout feature being England’s use of Bellingham and Jones in free-roaming roles.

This team is at its maximum potential when they play through Bellingham and today was a good example why that is the case, particularly given how flat England looked immediately after half-time when Albania stopped him from getting on the ball.

Jones’ role saw him join the frontline and drop into the double pivot according to what England needed from him, a departure from the pivots in Gareth Southgate’s system, who seldom moved into the frontline.

That was also why Morgan Rogers could replace Jones and fit into the team fairly seamlessly despite not being a holding midfielder by trade. Plenty of positives to take from Tuchel’s debut!
