Macy’s is closing six locations in Texas, one of those in Houston’s Almeda Mall this year as part of its previously announced “A Bold New Chapter” strategy that focuses on closing underperforming stores.
Other stores affected in the Lone Star State include its Fairview location, the Shops at Willow Bend in Plano, Southlake Town Square in Southlake, West Bend, in Fort Worth, and Highlands of Flower Mound in Flower Mound, Texas.

The struggling department store giant announced its new strategy last year, and has slowly made progress on its goal of closing approximately 150 stores over a three-year period. Last month, Macy’s announced it would close 66 stores to focus on investing in new pilot Macy’s stores.
“Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter Strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go-forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service,” said Tony Spring, Macy’s chairman and chief executive officer.
Liquidation sales for the affected locations will begin in January and last for 8-12 weeks, as first reported by Axios. Furniture and free-standing Backstage stores will begin clearance sales in February.
The giant retailer has been inching along for years, struggling with new digital ventures like the rise of online shopping competitors and new fast-fashion retailers. It hasn’t been the only behemoth institution struggling. Similar chains like Sears, JCPenney, and Nieman Marcus have announced bankruptcies in recent years.
