Nets player grades: Cam Thomas double-doubles in 116-110 loss at Bulls

The Brooklyn Nets (22-44) were coming off a winnable game against the Cleveland Cavaliers without Donovan Mitchell, meaning that they were hungry for a win on this short road trip. With Thursday’s game at the Chicago Bulls (28-38) carrying more importance than a regular-season game due to the play-in tournament implications, but Brooklyn wasn’t able to get the result they wanted.

The Nets lost at the Bulls 116-110 and that came after Brooklyn looked to take control of the game in the third quarter after holding a 10-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. Cam Thomas had one of his games in a Nets uniform as he put up 24 points, six rebounds, and 10 assists while Tyrese Martin had one of his better games of the season with 19 points, four rebounds, and three assists coming off the bench.

Part of the reason that the Nets were unable to hold on to its lead in the fourth quarter was due to the fact that they didn’t have an answer for Bulls guard Coby White, who dropped 31 points and four assists during his time on the floor. Here are the Nets player grades following Thursday’s loss at the Bulls:

D’Angelo Russell: D

Russell did not have the easiest time scoring in this one as he wasn’t able to get enough separation for him to do his work within Brooklyn’s offense. Russell has had times this season where he has been able to impose his will on opposing defenses, but that wasn’t the case in this one. Russell did a good job passing the ball, but he also struggled with turnovers and foul at the same time.

Cam Thomas: A

Thomas had one of his best games of the season and it was all due to the fact that he was able to do whatever he wanted to on the offensive end of the floor. Not only was Thomas able to get to his spots on the floor against any of Chicago’s defenders, but he was setting up his teammates for easy scores left and right over the course of the game. Thomas showed that he has the ability to contribute in every facet of the game.

Cam Johnson: B+

Johnson had a solid outing in this one as he shot the ball well all over the floor, not just from behind the three-point line in a fast-paced matchup against the Bulls. Johnson does most of his damage shooting the ball from deep, but he showed his ability to finish at the rim. Johnson did what he could to help in the rebounding phase of the game and he was disruptive on the defensive end of the floor.

Ziaire Williams: B

Williams started this game well as he couldn’t miss from the field, especially from behind the three-point line, as he looks more confident with each passing game. Recently, Williams has become more of a consistent shooter from long-range and it is helping him continue to be a problem on the floor when you take into account his ability to defend.

Nic Claxton: A-

Claxton had one of his better games recently as he looked to be his most aggressive when guarded by Nikola Vucevic given that he had the quickness advantage on Vucevic. Claxton normally takes a backseat within the offensive flow, but once the ball touched his hands, he was constantly looking for ways to get to the rim for some impressive finishes. Claxton did a great job of rebounding the basketball and was awesome passing the ball.

Trendon Watford: D

Watford’s shooting struggles continued in this one as he couldn’t find any openings to get all the way to the rim like he has been used to so far this season. Watford likes to operate with his back to the basket or trying to overpower his man in the post, but once he was able to attach the basket, Chicago’s length deterred him from finishing strong. Watford did a good job of passing the ball, but that was about it for his overall contributions.

Jalen Wilson: C-

Wilson did not shoot the ball well in this one, but to be fair to him, he did not get many shots in this one as the offense was running through players like Cam Thomas and Tyrese Martin. Aside from that, Wilson did a solid job of giving effort in the rebounding portion of the game.

Day’Ron Sharpe: B+

Sharpe had one of his stronger performances for the Nets recently as he did a great job of finishing at the rim when the ball came his way. Sharpe did not wait for the ball to come to him, however, as he did his work on the boards throughout the game, leading to more scoring opportunities for him as well. Sharpe showcased his passing that is becoming less of a surprise as times goes on and his defense in the paint was solid.

Tyrese Martin: A

Martin continued a strong March in this one as he was on fire from three-point land, reminding some of his outing in Phoenix a few months ago. Martin was able to get to the rim as well and he showed off some nice finishes at the basket depending going against some of the Bulls’ length on the interior. Martin showed his ability to impact the game in multiple ways and that will continue to earn him minutes going forward.

Keon Johnson: D

Johnson came off the bench in this one as head coach Jordi Fernandez wanted to put more length on the floor against Chicago, but he did not do much coming in as a reserve. Johnson had a tough time shooting the ball as he couldn’t get anything to go from behind the three-point line and he had trouble finishing at the rim too. Johnson did a great job of defending the rim as the weak-side defender as an added bonus from the guard spot.
