NASHVILLE, Tenn. — In a double-overtime thriller, Texas basketball stunned bitter rival Texas A&M with a 94-89 win in the second round of the SEC Tournament. In the process, the Longhorns may have secured their NCAA Tournament hopes as well as the future for embattled head coach Rodney Terry.
The Longhorns (19-14) advance to face Tennessee Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in an SEC quarterfinal contest.

Imressive first half for Texas, but you almost get the feeling coach Rodney Terry wanted more. The Horns held A&M to 33.3% shooting and got buckets from nine different players. Arthur Kaluma has seven points and five rebounds, and he’s a big reason Texas leads on the boards 22-20.

The tenacious Texas defense hasn’t allowed an Aggie bucket in almost four minutes, and the Longhorn have upped their shooting percebtage to 40. That’s red hot in this game. Nine different players have scored for Texas.

Jayson Kent has again come in and given Texas a spark. So far, Texas leads on the boards; the Longhorns are so much more physical now that when they played A&M twice in January. But Aggie guard Manny Obaseki (7 points) is the difference in the game early.

Both teams are attacking the rim with abandon, and most drives are getting shut down in an early defensive war. Tre Johnson has five points so far to pace Texas.

When this Aggie defense is locked in, it’s a scary sight. They are being physical, being grabby and being downright nasty so far – and those are compliments. Texas is 3-of-10 to start the game; the Aggies just 2-of-6.

Texas will start guards Jordan Pope, Tre Johnson and Tramon Mark alongside forward Arthur Kaluma and post Kadin Shedrick. It’s a familiar lineup for Longhorn fans. Johnson, the SEC’s freshman of the year and the conference’s leading scorer, is the focus of the Longhorn offense.
Texas A&M will start guards Hayden Hefner, Wade Taylor IV and Manny Obaseki along with forwards Andersson Garcia and Henry Coleman III. Taylor, a senior, is the “head of the snake,” as Texas coach Rodney Terry calls him. He averages 15.2 points and 4.3 assists a game.
