United are through to the quarter-finals
Manchester United will play Lyon in the quarter-finals of the Europa League.
United booked their place in the last eight of Europe’s secondary club competition with a 4-1 win over Real Sociedad on Thursday night. That secured a 5-2 aggregate victory after the first leg in San Sebastian ended 1-1.
Lyon cruised into the quarter-finals after beating FCSB 7-1 on aggregate. They won last week’s first leg 3-1 in Romania before winning 4-0 in France tonight.
The first leg of United’s quarter-final tie with Lyon will take place on Thursday 10 April with the second leg set to be played a week later on Thursday 17 April.
Winning the Europa League is United’s only chance of salvaging anything from what has been a truly miserable campaign. Ruben Amorim’s side are out of both domestic cup competitions and are currently 14th in the Premier League table.
Their Europa League campaign has at least offered a glimmer of light for fans. After drawing all of their opening three games in the competition, United went on to win their remaining five league phase matches. Last week’s draw with Sociedad followed by Thursday’s victory means United are still unbeaten in this season’s competition and are the only club yet to suffer defeat in the 2024/25 Europa League.
Amorim’s side are back in league action later this week as they face Leicester City at the King Power Stadium before the international break. Defeat on Sunday could see them slip as low as 16th in the table.
