Texas Republican refers to transgender congresswoman as man

WASHINGTON (TNND) — A Texas Republican referred to Rep. Sarah McBride, the congresswoman who is openly transgender, as a man on Tuesday.

Chairman Keith Self, R-Texas, of the House of Representatives Subcommittee on Europe, said during a hearing, “I now recognize the representative from Delaware, Mr. McBride.”

Rep. McBride, who refers to herself as a woman, replied, “thank you, madam chair.” As she continued her remarks, Ranking Member William Keating, D-Mass., quickly grabbed his microphone and interrupted, “Mr. Chairman, could you repeat your introduction again please?”

“Yes. It’s a, it’s a – we have set the standard on the floor of the House, and I’m simply –” Chairman Self answered, pausing at the end.

Ranking Member Keating, interrupting, then requested the congressman explain what standard he was referring to and asked, “Would you repeat what you just said when you introduced a duly elected representative from the United States of America please,” raising his voice and tapping hard on the surface in front of him.

“I will: the representative from Delaware, Mr. McBride,” Chairman Self replied.

Ranking Member Keating told him he was out of order, adding, “Mr. Chairman, have you no decency?”

“I mean, I’ve come to know you a little bit, but this is not decent,” the Massachusetts Democrat said.

The chairman insisted on continuing the hearing, to which Ranking Member Keating said with a raised voice and forceful hand gestures, “You will not continue it with me unless you introduce a duly elected representative the right way.”

Chairman Self adjourned the hearing, and the ranking member quickly left the panel, patting Rep. McBride on the shoulder as he exited. Later that day, the congresswoman posted on social media platform X that she simply wants to “serve and to try to make this world a better place.”

“No matter how I’m treated by some colleagues, nothing diminishes my awe and gratitude at getting to represent Delaware in Congress. It is truly the honor and privilege of a lifetime,” she said.

Chairman Self posted that “it is the policy of the United States to recognize two sexes, male and female.”
