X outages: Thousands report X is down Monday

X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, experienced multiple spikes in reported outages Monday morning.

X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, is back online after experiencing an outage that lasted hours beginning Monday morning when users reported multiple spikes in outages. 

Downdetector data showed the app started experiencing issues early Monday with temporary outages spiking to 21,000 around 5 a.m. Another brief spike peaked at more than 38,000 reports around 9 a.m., and a third had surpassed 35,000 as of noon, with the most affected cities including Chicago, New York and Los Angeles, according Downdetector map.

After the app was restored Musk shared a post from X user “Doge Designer,” who suggested the issue may have been from an attack on the social site.

Musk shared the post, adding it was a “massive cyberattack” against his platform.

CNN reportedly spoke with Eric Noonan, CEO of cybersecurity provider CyberSheath, who told the outlet it wasn’t yet clear whether a cyberattack caused the platform outage.

“One of the things that should always be taken with a grain of salt is any statements made in the short period of time immediately after or even, in this case, during an attack,” Noonan told CNN.

A Chronicle reporter emailed media representatives for the Federal Bureau of Investigation to inquire about Musk’s cybersecurity claims; agency representatives responded —saying only the FBI did not wish to comment.

Users on the social media app Threads commented on the X outage. Users said that they we’re experiencing issues with posts and profiles loading. 

Meta, a company owned by Mark Zuckerberg that owns and operate Threads, Facebook and Instagram, posted to its Threads account this morning.

“Happy Monday! the gram is gramming, the threads are threading, the facebook is facebooking.” the Meta account posted.

Representatives for X could not be immediately reached for comment.
