Weather Authority Impact Day Saturday – Severe Storms

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — A Weather Authority Impact Day is in effect Saturday night as a strong cold front is forecast to move through the region. This front is forecast to produce a line of showers and thunderstorms that could cause damage.

The greatest risk for storms to develop will be Saturday night. These storms will likely be strong or severe as they push through the region late tonight.

The line of storms will move into Northwest Alabama between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. Saturday and then continue eastward overnight. Areas west of I-65 will have the greatest chance for strong to severe storm development as conditions are more supportive of storm development.

This line is forecast to track into the Huntsville metro around midnight and then Northeast Alabama by 2 a.m. The line will fully move out of the area by 3 a.m. or 4 a.m. on Sunday.

Damaging winds greater than 60 mph will be the primary threat from storms Saturday night, but a few embedded tornadoes are possible along the line. Torrential rainfall will be another threat as up to 2 inches of rain may fall in some spots.

With the heavy rain that has fallen already this week, isolated flash flooding will be possible. Local creeks, rivers, and streams are still running high after many areas received nearly 4 inches of rain. If you live in a flood-prone area remain alert for rapidly changing conditions.
