MILTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – ”When it comes to this rain that is coming, yeah we’re all on edge,” Lisa Jarvis said.
Lisa Jarvis and her neighbors living on East Mud River Road in Milton said recent floods brought water dangerously close to their homes.
“That one got scary. I could walk out on my back deck and look down and see water, and I would just turn around and go back,” Jarvis said.
“If we get what they say we’re going to get, it’ll probably be pretty close this time,” Roger Shull said.
Dale Martin is the safety officer for the Milton Volunteer Fire Department. He said they’re on call 24/7 and have people in place if rescue is needed.
“We have a swift water team. We have about 10 guys who are certified in that swift water team. We do have a boat that we’re able to take out, it doesn’t have a motor so we have some mutual aid with other departments such as Nitro,” Martin said.
After hearing about the chance of heavy rain this weekend, Jarvis said she has already started moving items to higher ground, but she has nowhere to go if floodwaters make it inside.
“My son and daughter-in-law are thinking about going to a motel. We’ve got two dogs. They have two dogs, and we can’t just leave them. We can’t,” Jarvis said.
Jarvis said she’s praying the water won’t get too high this time after seeing neighbors rescued from recent floods.
“The last two floods that we’ve had, we have seen water rescues in behind our house. I mean, that’s not something you want to see.”
The Milton VFD said they have plans in place for rescues, but it’s difficult to prepare because they don’t know what they’ll encounter until it happens.
Martin said it’s best to avoid high water on roadways because it doesn’t take much water to displace your car.
