US Senate candidate Sam Parker sparked controversy by suggesting Selena Gomez be deported after her emotional Instagram video supporting undocumented immigrants. Gomez, who shared her frustrations about ICE deportations, faced backlash and later deleted the video. She has previously advocated for immigrant rights, highlighting her own family’s immigrant background in her work.

A heated debate unfolded on social media after US Senate candidate Sam Parker called for the “deportation” of actress and singer Selena Gomez following her tearful video expressing empathy for undocumented immigrants being deported from America.

Gomez, on Tuesday morning, shared an emotional clip on Instagram in which she broke down while addressing the deportation by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). “I just wanted to say that I’m so sorry,” Gomez began in a tearfully video on her Instagram stories. “All my people are getting attacked, the children. I don’t understand. I wish I could do something, but I can’t. I’ll try everything, I promise,” she said.

Gomez, however, deleted the video after receiving significant backlash online. Gomez addressed the backlash by writing, “Apparently it’s not ok to show empathy for people.”

Among the many angry posts that were sent her way, was one from Parker who accused the singer of having an “entitlement attitude toward America” due to her Mexican heritage. On an alternate platform, Parker wrote, “Selena Gomez picked illegals over America b/c she’s the 3rd gen descendant of Mexican illegals who received citizenship in the ’87 Amnesty. Maybe Selena should be deported, too?”

He later took to his X hanle to tweet, “Deport Selena Gomez.”

Responding to the post, Selena took to her Stories to write, “Oh Mr Parker. Mr Parker. Thanks for the laugh and the threat.”

Fans were quick to rally behind the singer and defend her post while highlighting her advocacy for immigrant rights. Many took to their handles to share the singer’s 2019 Netflix documentary ‘Living Undocumented’, which chronicled the struggles of undocumented families in the US. In the project that she produced, Gomez shared a deeply personal connection to the subject, saying, “I don’t think people realize that my family… my grandparents were immigrants. To just think about the life I’ve been given and how blessed I am, my hope is that I see change.”

This is not the only time that Gomez has been vocal about immigration and social justice issues. Earlier this year, during the Los Angeles premiere of her Oscar-nominated musical Emilia Perez, Gomez reaffirmed her stance, saying, “I definitely want to stand by my people,” when asked about her disagreements with controversial remarks made at a Trump rally.
