5 reasons Green Bay should be excited about drafting edge Barryn Sorrell

He had to wait and little bit, but Barryn Sorrell is finally off the board. The Green Bay Packers tuned in his draft card is the fourth round with the 124th overall pick.

Sorrell had a very good 2024 campaign for the Longhorns. He registered 44 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, and six sacks. Sorrell’s tackle for loss and sacks numbers were his best on the collegiate level, and he tied his most tackles.

With that being said, here’s five reasons why the Packers should be excited about drafting Sorrell:

It’s one thing to have one good season. However, the best do it repeatedly. Sorrell fits that mold perfectly as he logged 37 tackles in 2023 and 44 tackles in 2022 (was named named Honorable Mention All-Big 12 ) and 2024. He’s been consistent getting to the quarterback by averaging five sacks per season over the last three seasons, and he also has 24 tackles for loss over that span.

Sorrell wasn’t just another name player on the bench. He was a significant contributor to the Longhorns since the 2022 campaign. Over that time, Sorrell started 40 games for Texas, which included back-to-back college football playoff appearances by the program. Getting tons of experience at a top-level school like Texas carries a lot of weight.

Sorrell has been productive year in and year out mainly because of one thing, his motor. Even when he gets blocked, Sorrell is relentless and also has a variety of moves, which allows him to eventually get free and attack down the line. There’s no substitute for effort in football.

If the Packers were looking for an athletic edge, they got one in Sorrell. He registered a 34-inch vertical jump and a 10’1 in the broad jump at the NFL Combine. He also did a 4.36 in the shuttle and logged a 7.06 in the three cone. Sorrell’s 9.31 RAS score is ranked 142nd out of 2,029 edge rushers since 1987.

Being big and strong is great, but it’s paramount to be good with your hands as an edge rusher in the league. Sorrell is constant with his hand fighting, and it prevents him from staying blocked too long. He can also use his hands to extend his arms and set the edge against the run, which is a big trait to have.
