Vaibhav Suryavanshi hits a massive six on his first ball in IPL against Shardul Thakur. (PC: X/IPL)
Rajasthan Royals (RR)’s Vaibhav Suryavanshi couldn’t have asked for a better start to his IPL career. The 14-year-old, who became the youngest to debut in the league, made room to hit a sumptuous lofted cover drive against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG)’s senior bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur for a huge six on his first ball in the tournament at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium on Saturday (April 19).
Watch the moment here:
The teenager is playing this match only because RR skipper Sanju Samson picked up an injury and got retired hurt in the previous game against Delhi Capitals. Till now, the messaging from the franchise was around protecting him as much as they can.
But given the opportunity to come out as the impact player in the second innings, he wasted no time in impressing. The reaction from the commentators on that six says it all, too.
He didn’t stop there either. In the next over he tonked the first ball he faced from Avesh Khan — another international star — for a maximum, too. This time it was a full ball on the middle and off and the left-hander smacked it right over the bowler’s head.
He got a bit lucky as well. There was a leading edge that landed safely, a top-edge on the pull that was dropped by Abdul Samad in the deep (and went for four) and had a few more fall in vacant regions. The youngster eventually got out in the ninth over to part-time spinner Aiden Markram who beat him in flight before Rishabh Pant made no mistake to clip off his bails. He got out for 34 (20).
