12 rescued, others hospitalized after apartment fire, explosion in Detroit: Reports

Multiple people were hospitalized after a fire broke out at an apartment building located on Littlefield Street early Monday morning on Detroit’s west side, according to local reports.

The fire, which possibly accompanied an explosion, reportedly began spreading at about 4 a.m., local outlets reported, including WXYZ and WDIV-TV.

Fire commissioner Chuck Simms told reporters at the scene that 12 people were rescued from the building, including six adults and six kids. Another seven people were hospitalized, five of whom were children, Simms told WXYZ.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

USA TODAY left messages early Monday with the Detroit Fire Department seeking information.
